Fishing boats pulled up on the shore on a pebbled beach surrounded by high cliffs reminiscent of the Norman landscape of Fécamp.
Two young boys enliven this scene, one of them holding a basket. The straight line formed by the boats contrasts with the verticality of the cliffs and brings out the seascape admirably.
This theme was widely evoked by the plein air painters of the second half of the 19th century.
